Vital Pulp Therapies
What Are Vital Pulp Therapies?
Vital pulp therapy (VPT) is a group of procedures designed to preserve the vitality (living status) of the dental pulp when it has been injured or compromised by cavities, trauma, or restorative dental work.
The goal of vital pulp therapy is to maintain the health and function of the pulp, avoiding the need for a full root canal when possible.
Types of Vital Pulp Therapy
Pulp Capping
Pulp capping involves placing a protective material over an exposed or nearly exposed pulp to encourage healing and maintain pulp vitality. This is most effective when the pulp exposure is small and the surrounding pulp tissue is healthy.
Pulpotomy
A pulpotomy involves removing the damaged or infected portion of the pulp from the crown of the tooth while preserving the healthy pulp tissue in the roots. A biocompatible material is placed to promote healing.
Apexogenesis
Apexogenesis is a procedure performed on young, developing teeth (teeth with immature roots). The procedure allows the roots to continue developing and strengthening, which is particularly important in children and adolescents whose permanent teeth are still forming. By preserving the vitality of the pulp, the root can continue to grow to its full length and thickness.
