Cracked Teeth
Understanding Cracked Teeth
Cracked teeth can present a range of symptoms depending on the severity and location of the crack. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to save the tooth and prevent further damage.
Types and Severity
Craze Lines
Craze lines are tiny, superficial cracks in the outer enamel of the tooth. They are extremely common in adult teeth, cause no pain, and generally require no treatment.
Deeper Cracks
Cracks that extend beyond the enamel into the dentin or pulp of the tooth are more serious. These cracks can cause:
- Thermal Sensitivity — Pain or discomfort when eating or drinking hot or cold items
- Biting Pain — Sharp pain when biting down or when releasing a bite
The symptoms may come and go, making cracked teeth sometimes difficult to diagnose.
Why Treatment Is Important
If a cracked tooth is left untreated, the crack can allow bacteria to infiltrate the pulp of the tooth, leading to infection, inflammation, and potentially the loss of the tooth. Early evaluation by an endodontist can help determine the extent of the crack and the best course of treatment to save the tooth.
